El Remanso: The Story Behind the Name

One of the questions our guests ask us most often is why we decided to name this corner of Patagonia "El Remanso." The short answer? It wasn't a random decision — the river itself inspired the name.

However, El Remanso is much more than that.

If we get technical, a "remanso" (backwater or eddy) is a hydraulic phenomenon where the water's depth increases and its speed decreases. In simple terms, it's that place where the river widens, grows deep, and seems to pause and rest before continuing downstream.

For us, it made complete sense to name ourselves after it. The river flowing down from Lago Totoral takes a breath right in front of us before reaching its mouth at the Puelo. We want El Remanso to be that for our guests — a place where the current stops, allowing you to rest and reconnect before continuing on your way.

But… did you know this wasn't always the original name?

From "El Monte" — a nod to our last name and the site's topography — to "Martín Pescador" (Kingfisher) — honoring the local wildlife — many names crossed our minds before we landed on the final one. Still, we felt that none of them fully captured the feeling we had when arriving at the Lodge. In the end, the river gave us the answer; the calm of the water was what best defined us, and so El Remanso it was.

We like to think that what happens to the river in front of the lodge is the same thing that happens to those who stay at El Remanso when they disconnect with us for a few days.

Routine is often like the river's current — fast, noisy, and sometimes a bit chaotic. For us, coming to El Remanso has always felt like reaching that wide, calm stretch of water, and that's exactly what we aim to offer: a moment to slow down and simply enjoy the silence.

Best of all, just like the river that continues its journey toward the Puelo with renewed direction after passing through the backwater, our guests also leave here changed. They leave recharged, with new energy to take on their everyday lives.

Are you coming to find your own "remanso"? We'll be waiting for you at the Puelo.
